Worker dies at Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in Black Friday stampede

A Wal-Mart store was the scene of chaos this morning.

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

The cause of death was pending.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said.

Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Darnit - I didn't see this before I posted the same thing on the non-sports section.

Absolutely horrible the way people can be - and all because they wanted to save a few bucks.

Look for an end to this chit next year. The .gov will step in and make some kind of law about these sales and how to do them.

That is crazy, completely run over somebody to save a few bucks. Then to find out you killed the guy. Also a pregnant women got hurt in the same store. Of course, that is kinda her own fault, she should have never been near that place.

My wife went this morning and she isn't aggressive, needless to say she didn't come home with much. The one thing she wanted (Barbie Jeep) for our daughter, she had in her grasp, when a guy comes over her back knocks her to the ground and takes it. Good damn thing I wasn't there because the whole City of Norton PD would have been taking my ass to jail. I would have let him get about 10 yards away then I would have went Eric Berry on his ass.

I was one of the Barbie Jeep mommies this morning too, but I didn't try to grab it from anyone! I'd been there since 3:30 with my mother. By 4:45 there were a lot of people surrounding the small stacks of Jeeps. My mom was getting one as well and a guy that had just walked up tried to come over her head and take it out of her hands and she had to pull it back away from him. Peoples' faces were actually turning red as they pulled them down! I yelled, "Let me out of here and you can fight for them!" because they had me stuck in the middle.
A fight broke out in electronics at around 4am!

I wasn't planning on going, but wasn't sleepy around 4:30, so I headed up there. Got to Wal Mart around 4:50, had to park in front of Goody's.

I don't know how many police Norton has, but they all had to have been up there this morning.

Just getting into the store was an undertaking. Walked in through the buggy return bay next to Hibbett's. Made my way to jewelry pretty easily, made my purchase. Headed back towards electronics to see if I could grab a couple of the $7 2GB memory cards. Took forever to get back there, then couldn't find the cards. They had some that weren't advertised, but that was it.

They made a big mistake putting all of the electronic stuff back near eletronics. That made it damn near impossible to go from Sporing Goods to the grocery side of the store. People were literally packed in there like sardines. I didn't have a buggy, so I was able to squeeze in and out of there.

They had a ton of the $29 HP printer, the $250 video camera. I saw one guy who had a buggy full of the cheap appliances they sell every year for $5 or so. Thought about trying to find a Kitchen Aid mixer, but toys and that area was as congested as electronics.

Did make one impulse buy. My neice told me yesterday that she wanted a Barbie jeep and I managed to get the last one. Had to knock some woman out of the way, but it was worth it.

I was actually out of the store by 5:40. Not really something I would do again. First time I'd went to WM since they moved to the new store and I somewhat liked the old way better. My wife works at WM and got there around 3:50 and barely found a place to park in their designated parking area.

Completely different experience at Sears. There were about 20 people in the store (which seemed crowded anyway). Got in and out of there in about 20 minutes and I was home by 6:30.

I didn't really see any people getting rowdy, although there were plenty of opportunities for such behavior. I felt like punching a couple of people just for being stupid.

I don't understand why get so damn crazy. It's just a bunch of junk anyway.
